NVW2017: VolunteerNow Young Leaders Council

For almost two years, the VolunteerNow Young Leaders Council has pioneered innovative programming that trains the next generation of philanthropic and community leaders. From educational panels with nonprofit leaders to quarterly service projects, these young professionals are dedicated to transforming North Texas through volunteerism.

On the final day of 2017's National Volunteer Week, we look to the future. The current YLC executive committee discusses what service and volunteering mean to them.

Richie Caldwell, President

“Service is a natural emotion. I believe volunteering is a vocation I am called to. There's a contagious spirit to giving in young people today if you excite them for good.”

Olivia Pipitone, Executive Committee Member, at large

“Volunteering offers vital help to people in need, worthwhile causes, and the community. An act of humility that places others before oneself, true service is done without complaint or criticism, encompasses the integrity of one's whole being, and can change lives for the better. To serve is to love and to love is to serve.  It keeps me mentally stimulated, provides me with meaningful connections and a sense of purpose, and brings fun and fulfillment to my life.”

Wynn Hawker-Boehnke, Service Chair

“Volunteering is important to me, because 'who else, if not me?’ I can’t expect change to happen if I am not willing to get my hands in the thick of it and make change happen. I also believe in Servant Leadership and act in accordance that others will follow suit if they witness your commitment in action.”

Megan Mader, Education/Programs Chair

“Service means doing something for others without expecting anything in return. It means you are providing an opportunity for someone (or a group) that they may not have otherwise had. Service means having compassion and lending your time, effort, and support to help those in need. Volunteering is important to me because there are so many great people and organizations out there who need a little extra help. Volunteering is an easy way to make a huge difference, and it allows you to work together with others and gain insight and new perspectives. It is crucial for strengthening and uniting the community, and it's also a way to save resources or make the utilization of limited resources more efficient.”

Judith Villarreal, Social Chair

“Service means helping my community grow stronger and grow closer together. Serving my community allows me to actively show that ‘love’ is a verb. I love my community, and I love helping work with others to make it a more beautiful place for all who live here. Volunteering allows me to be apart of a bigger movement within my community that believes in coming together to help one another as we work towards creating a better, safer and happier community.”
