National Volunteer Week: Burleson Elementary

Antonia Calvert

"Mrs. Calvert has been a God-send to Rufus C. Burleson Elementary and to me. She is a grandmother raising her 5-year-old grandson with the assistance of her husband, and they have other children in secondary schools within Dallas ISD.

I asked Mrs. Calvert to assist me in reactivating our PTA by being a board officer in the fall semester, and, as always, she accepted with a smile. From the day she was elected Vice-President she hit the floor running, and little did she know, she would become the President, as she is currently serving as. What make Mrs. Calvert stand out as a volunteer in our school are listed as following:

  • Her love for children, her community, and our school.

  • Her dedication to serving in her grandson classroom and assisting in other areas of need in our school.

  • Her passion for all to receive the best education possible no matter their circumstances.

  • Her nurturing spirit toward all children in our building on a daily basis.

  • Her warm smile just light up the building when she enters.

  • Her sense of urgency to provide to our teachers when they ask for assistance from the PTA.

  • She is well organized and keep accurate records for the PTA.

  • She is always looking “with the end in mind” for our school.

  • Her desire to assist parents when they may have questions concerning our school and PTA.

  • Excellent leadership skills as well as a team player.

  • Finally - we would be completely lost without her in our lives.

She is well-known in her community as an honest and hardworking mother and grandmother. It has been a pleasure to work with Mrs. Calvert, as we have come a long way with our PTA and built our volunteer list and hours with her assistance. All we have to do is ask and if it is within her power, she will deliver every time."
